Effect of climate change on food security among arable crop farmers in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, Nigeria

This study examined the effects of climate change on food security of arable crop farmers in Dutse local area of Jigawa state, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling was employed in this research. This consisted of purposive selection of six villages based on their status quo in arable crop production. Sixty (60) arable crop farmers were randomly selected. Descriptive statistics such as mean, percentage and frequency was used to analyze the data. The result revealed that 30% of the respondents were unaware of climate change while 60% were aware. Result further revealed that, 80% of the respondents were affected by climate change, in one way or the other, while 45% attested of food insecurity, probably due to negative effect of climate as a result of drought, deforestation, flood, bush burning and erosion. It was recommended that policies must aim at promoting farm level adaptation through emphasis on the early warning systems (EWS) and disaster risk management (DRM) as well as effective participation of farmers in adopting better agricultural and land use practices.
