Use of an acid pH thymol-containing cleansing wash (Saugella Attiva) in pregnancy and postpartum hygiene

The vaginal microbiome (VMB) is composed of microorganisms which exist in a state of equilibrium and provide protection against pathogens. A reduction in the population of Lactobacillus spp., the primary vaginal microbiota, can lead to conditions which promote vaginal microbial contamination. Pregnancy and the post-partum period are physiological conditions characterised by common gynaecological and sexual problems, during which there is a greater risk of microbial infection in the vaginal environment, leading to an increased risk during delivery and impaired quality of life for the woman. There is a strong rationale for using cleansers containing natural substances derived from medicinal plant extracts with documented microbiological and pharmacological activity in daily intimate hygiene. Notable among these potential ingredients is Thymus vulgaris extract because of its high thymol content, which has an antibacterial and antifungal activity while preserving the viability of Lactobacillus spp. Clinical data were collected based on the daily intimate cleanser containing thyme and sage extracts (Saugella Attiva – SA), used once or twice daily for four weeks, in pregnant or breastfeeding women. The clinical findings showed a significant reduction in genital signs and symptoms (itching, burning, erythema, oedema, dyspareunia), normalisation of vaginal pH and improvement in female sexual discomfort during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Clinical evidence has demonstrated that SA is a reliable and safe cleanser for daily use in pregnant and postpartum women.
